93% Shopping Online Christmas 2009

Online shopping is top of the UK’s shopping list for Christmas 2009. This is according to 93% of UK shoppers surveyed in the E-customer service index from the IMRG. With 71% saying that they are prepared to conduct half or more of for their Christmas shopping online.

Again price is priority for the now increasingly discerning online shopper in the current climate.  88% are expected to compare prices. Although once dominated by the younger consumer, it highlights that the online market is now appealing more to the wider demographic. As well as hunting for the best buys, and taking more time to compare prices; online shoppers have high expectations for their online experience and customer service.
 
This trend is mirrored In the U.S. in a recent survey by Iperceptions which suggests that 38.6% of visitors to e-commerce websites come with intention to research products and discover prices. This data comes from 360,000 American shoppers surveyed.
 
The results of this survey identifies top barriers to purchase. Although 17.2% said they reached the site with the intention to buy only 61.5 % of these visitors completed the purchase.

  • Price issues (13%)
  • Website navigation and usability problems (13%)
  • Shipping policies (9%)
More and more shopping is conducted on the web, and price comparison is becoming regular practice and easier for many shoppers. The more sophisticated online consumer knows how to find the best buys and that he needn’t suffice with a poor online experience. Competition is high and so is customer expectation.
