No your eyes are not deceiving you and Google say it symbolises their focus to Search. The Google Search box has just got bigger and so has the text, they are calling it their super sized search box.

The general views of those speaking about it across the web appears to be a negative one, too big, too weird, don’t fix what’s not broken, or simply who cares?
