Research from TNS and Mintel has uncovered online usage statistics for the UK in 2008

UK housewives top the US in their share of leisure time online. UK housewives reported in the TNS survey that they spend 47% of their Leisure time online compared with 38% in the US. 66% of UK people surveyed had shopped online in the past month. Social Networking reached around half, saying that they had either viewed or participated in Social Networking sites.

A sample of 27,522 18 to 55 year olds was surveyed from 16 countries, which included the UK. From all countries between 63% and 87% rated the Internet as playing a crucial or important role when making the following purchases:

Holiday (87%), PC (80%), a major investment or a financial decision (73%), theatre and/or concert tickets (71%), household good e.g. fridge or washing machine (67%), a mobile phone (66%), TV and/or DVD player (66%), a house (65%) and bought a car (63%).

UK online shopping was worth £15 billion in 2008, research from Mintel revealed.
