Race Online UK 2012

Internet Trends

Get the nation online by 2012, says Martha Lane Fox. The co-founder of lastminute.com and non executive director of M&S, C4 and Mydeco.com has partnered up with various major organisations and big names such as BT, Google, McDonald’s, Microsoft, The Internet Advertising Bureau,  and Sky for the race to get Britain online by the end of the Olympic year 2012.

The race to get UK online by 2012 is partly driven by the huge positive impact that it is expected to have on the UK economy. It is reported that 10,000,000 people have never been on the Internet and four million of those are said to be socially excluded in sectors such as the over 65’s, unemployed as well as those in families.

Those involved in this manifesto report the benefits to consumers of gaining Internet access, which includes access to better deals online, consumer savings and access to employment.  Supported by the prime minister in difficult economic times may not mean funding, therefore this may seem an ambitious objective in such a short period of time. However it is proposed that this can be achieved by better use of existing IT resources that have already been implemented in the sectors accessed by the public such as libraries. Also by utilising the support of partner organisations widely accessed by the public such as McDonald’s.

A major partner Microsoft, say its mission is “to enable people and businesses throughout the world to realise their full potential. As part of its Race Online 2012 partnership, Microsoft UK has promised to put the combined weight of our 32,000 strong partner network, more than 700 IT Academies and our Britain Works programme behind Race Online 2012, to focus on digital skills that increase employability prospects for 500,000 people over the next three years.”

Businesses are encouraged to join Race Online 2012 and can find out more or get involved in Race Online 2012 http://raceonline2012.org/get-involved
