UK Bing out of Beta

Search Engines

This month saw the Bing Search engine launched in the UK out of beta. Microsoft is said to have only three percent of the UK search market currently, however Microsoft is challenging Google’s 80 percent suggesting that once people become aware of Bing, they will realise that it is better. Now that UK Bing is out of Beta, new features will be released including Twitter search http://www.bing.com/twitter, and integration with Wolfram Alpha the recently launched and branded knowledge search engine. UK Wolfram Alpha offers computational search, which differs from the simple search currently offered by search engines like Google. Wolfram Alpha can conduct more complex calculations and offer statistics that are relevant to user searches.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft Bing can really challenge Google, what affect this will have on traffic to websites and how it affects Search engine optimisation.

In the U.S. Microsoft Bing reached nearly 10% market share in October 2009, that’s an increase of 7%, Hitwise figures revealed. Both Google and Yahoo lost market share of one percent each, with Google still leading with the majority at 70% market share. Although still a minority share Microsoft’s Bing Search Engine is showing some punch, after being released in the U.S. in May earlier this year.
